Woman fatally shot after hugging police officer discharges gun

24-year old Adaisha Miller was celebrating her 25th birthday early at a Detroit party when she hugged an off-duty police officer causing his handgun to discharge, fatally wounding her.

Detroit Police sergeant Eren Stephens indicates the young woman (her birthday was yesterday) “embraced the officer from behind, causing the holstered weapon to accidentally discharge.”

The bullet punctured Miller’s lung before entering her heart.

Miller was rushed to the hospital but died soon after arrival.

Adaisha’s distraught mother told television station WDIV-TV: “For this to happen to her, whether they want to call it freak accident or mistake in judgment, it should have never happened to my child, and there’s nothing I can do to get her back.

The unnamed Detroit officer has been placed on administrative duties while the accident is being investigated.

A lawyer for the Detroit Police Officers Association says the officer involved in the accident is obviously distressed by the incident:

“This was just a freak accident. They were having a party and the next thing, a woman is dead. He’s devastated by what happened.”

A sad, unfortunate, accident.
